If you’ve been following my style, I’m sure the sight of me in a rich color might make you raise an eyebrow. Well, it’s Xmas! This type of burgundy is classic and not quite as “out there” as the usual reds, which appeals to my incognito aesthetics. I’m basically wearing red wine as a velvet oversized shirtdress with a shaggy cream cardigan like a chic Mrs. Claus.
If my shaggy faux fur cardigan looks familiar to you, it’s because using it as a featured item for Xmas has become a slight tradition. In fact, I wore it AND another burgundy item last Xmas! (Another one of last year’s holiday posts explains why I favor “Xmas” over Christmas. Hint: It’s because I’m agnostic… but it also has to do with a silly little thing called “Kissmas” and the evolution of Christmas becoming a more inclusive holiday.)
I figure if I’m going to wear a color that’s out of the ordinary, I’ll have to master it because it’s out of character for me. I happen to really like burgundy but feel this shirtdress is reserved for the holidays because it’s the only time I feel like this color (with it’s especially velvety texture) is appropriate for my mostly mute color style. Balancing it out meant adding some 1970’s burgundy aviator sunglasses and matching dark lipstick with an extra fun texture.
This color/texture combo definitely suggests I got at least a little bit of inspiration from the ever-present Santa Claus. But, heck, when you can make Claus colors look this chic, it’s more of a triumph than a cheesy outfit lacking a bag of gifts. It can be a challenge, but updating expected with the unexpected is a present to yourself that everyone can participate in!
Happy Xmas to you all!
